When Mikael first reached out to me about proposing to Destiny, he already knew one thing.
He didn’t want to choose a location just because it was beautiful. He wanted it to mean something.
As we talked about ideas, he mentioned a vineyard and wondered about flower fields. He was new to the area and wasn’t very familiar with local attractions, but he kept coming back to one detail about Destiny.
She absolutely loves butterflies.
The moment he said that, I knew exactly where we should look.
The Greensboro Science Center is one of the most unique places to propose in Greensboro. Lush native flowers, colorful butterflies flying freely around you, and a peaceful atmosphere create an incredibly romantic setting. Even better, the Science Center offers opportunities to arrange private access before the exhibit opens to the public, making it possible to have an intimate proposal without a crowd of visitors nearby.
As soon as I mentioned the butterfly exhibit during our phone call, Mikael sounded excited.
It wasn’t just pretty.
It was her.
That’s always my favorite kind of proposal.
Planning a Private Butterfly House Proposal
One of my favorite parts of photographing proposals actually happens long before anyone gets down on one knee.
I love helping people brainstorm ideas that truly reflect their relationship instead of simply choosing the trendiest location.
Once Mikael decided on the butterfly exhibit, he worked with the wonderful staff at the Greensboro Science Center to arrange a private visit before the exhibit officially opened.
A few days before the proposal, we finalized our timeline and discussed exactly how everything would unfold so we could keep the surprise intact.
On the morning of the proposal, I arrived early to scout the exhibit and meet with the butterfly house staff. Together, we came up with a plan that would allow me to photograph everything without giving away the surprise.
One of the things that makes the Greensboro Science Center such a fun proposal location is that it feels like an adventure from beginning to end. You can spend the day exploring together before or after the proposal, making it an experience rather than just a single moment. Wander through the colorful aquarium filled with sharks, jellyfish, penguins, and playful fish, stroll through the zoo to visit red pandas, meerkats, tigers, and the beloved hippos, or climb to the top of the giant treehouse playground for tree top views of the park. If you’re both kids at heart, you’ll love the prehistoric dinosaur exhibits and interactive museum displays, while nature lovers will appreciate the peaceful walking paths, pond, the impressive aquarium & the butterfly house where hundreds of butterflies fly freely around you.
Becoming “Just Another Visitor”
Proposal photography sometimes feels a little like theater.
The best proposal photographs happen when the person being proposed to has absolutely no idea I’m there.
After Mikael and Destiny entered the butterfly exhibit, I waited a few minutes before casually walking in behind them.
Instead of immediately pointing my camera toward the couple, I blended in with the other visitors.
Well…the staff, since we had the exhibit almost entirely to ourselves.
I wandered through the tropical garden photographing butterflies, caterpillars, and flowers while chatting with one of the attendants about the insects.
To anyone watching, I was simply another nature photographer enjoying a quiet morning in the butterfly house.
Meanwhile, I kept one eye on Mikael, waiting for the subtle signal we’d planned ahead of time that told me the proposal was only moments away.
The Moment Everything Changed
One of the things I love most about proposals is that no matter how carefully we plan them, the emotions are always completely genuine.
When Mikael finally got down on one knee, time seemed to slow down.
Surrounded by butterflies fluttering through the garden, he asked Destiny to spend forever with him.
And she said yes.
The butterflies continued floating quietly around them as if they had somehow become part of the celebration.
It was peaceful.
Joyful.
And perfectly suited to who they are as a couple.
Right after, a butterfly floated right in front of them as they happily showed off their engagement ring.
