There is something really special about getting to photograph families through the years.
I photographed these two on their wedding day years ago. Later, I photographed their in-home newborn session after they welcomed their daughter into the world. Now here we are again, documenting their little family during the wildly sweet toddler stage, complete with flower picking, tiny hand squeezes, giggles, and endless curiosity.
Their daughter was 18 months old during this session, which is one of my favorite ages to photograph. Toddlers are wonderfully honest. They do not care about perfect poses or forced smiles. They want to explore, be held, wander through the flowers, and fully experience the world around them. Honestly, that is where the magic lives.
For this session, we met at Dogwood Farms in Belews Creek near Winston-Salem while the purple larkspur fields were blooming. The flowers were absolutely unreal. Soft pastel wildflowers stretched across the fields while golden evening light filtered through the trees. It felt peaceful, open, and relaxed in the best kind of way.

Dogwood Farms is one of my favorite locations for spring and summer family sessions near Winston-Salem. Depending on the season, you can find blooming larkspur, daisies, poppies, sunflowers, and wide open spaces that give children room to move naturally.
That freedom matters.
Young children are rarely happiest standing still and smiling on command for an hour. Sessions tend to go so much better when kids have space to wander a little, pick flowers, cuddle with their parents, or be tossed in the air.
This is especially true for toddlers.
Instead of expecting children to perform perfectly, I build sessions around connection and movement. We keep things relaxed and playful while still creating beautiful imagery that families are proud to hang on their walls.

One thing many families do not realize is that flower bloom timing changes every year depending on weather and seasonal conditions.
As a North Carolina local who spends a lot of time outdoors exploring and photographing throughout the region, I keep a close eye on bloom timing each season so I can help guide families toward the best timing for the type of flowers they are hoping for.
Some families love the dreamy pastel look of larkspur. Others are drawn to cheerful daisies, vibrant poppies, or golden sunflower fields later in the summer.
I am always happy to help you figure out the best season and location based on the look you are envisioning for your family photos.

I know many families search for mini sessions, especially during flower season at places like Dogwood Farms near Winston-Salem.
Mini sessions can absolutely work well for some families, especially with children who warm up quickly to the camera. But with babies and toddlers, I personally prefer longer family sessions whenever possible.
Young children usually need a little time to settle in and warm up to get truly authentic photos.
At the beginning of a session, many toddlers are still figuring things out. They may want to stay close to mom or dad, quietly observe, or explore their surroundings before they are ready to fully engage.
That slower beginning is completely normal.
When sessions are rushed, parents often feel pressure for their child to “perform” quickly, and kids can feel that energy too. Longer sessions create room to breathe. They allow us to follow your child’s pace instead of forcing constant direction or smiles.
Some of my favorite images happen after everyone relaxes a little.
That is usually when toddlers start showing their real personalities. The giggles come out. The cuddles become genuine. Parents stop worrying about perfection and start simply enjoying their child.
For families who want a more relaxed, elevated experience that feels playful instead of stressful, longer sessions tend to create more meaningful photographs and a much better overall experience.

This family absolutely nailed their outfits for a wildflower session.
Soft blues and neutrals photographed beautifully against the purple larkspur fields. Mom’s flowy navy dress added movement and texture without feeling overly formal, while their daughter’s light blue dress fit the setting perfectly.
For flower field sessions, I usually recommend soft or neutral colors, natural textures, and clothing that allows families to comfortably move, sit, walk, and play together naturally.
The goal is for your family to look coordinated without feeling overly styled or stiff.

I photograph family sessions throughout Winston-Salem, Belews Creek, Greensboro, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and across North Carolina. I especially love working with families who value connection, nature, and a slower, more meaningful experience over perfectly posed photos.
Whether your kids are wild toddlers, shy preschoolers, adventurous big kids, or somewhere in between, I approach sessions with patience and flexibility so everyone can actually enjoy the experience.
Because years from now, I do not think your children will care whether every single hair was perfectly in place.
I think they will care that these photos remind them what it felt like to be loved.
If you are looking for a Winston-Salem family photographer or are interested in planning your own flower field family session at Dogwood Farms, I would love to hear from you.
