A guide for thoughtful folks who want to make it meaningful (and maybe even a little magical).
If you’re the kind of person who values intention, connection, and a good story—you’re in the right place. Proposing at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, is one of the most timeless, romantic gestures you can make. With mountain views, gardens that feel like a dream, and just the right amount of privacy, it’s the perfect place to ask the biggest question of your life.
The Biltmore isn’t just beautiful—it’s iconic. Whether your partner loves architecture, gardens, history, or just quiet moments in stunning places, this 8,000-acre estate offers everything you need for a truly unforgettable proposal. It’s no wonder so many people choose this spot for such a meaningful milestone.
Greg reached out to me weeks before he and his girlfriend, Bee, would be visiting the Biltmore Estate. Greg had a surprise proposal planned, but he needed some guidance on the best places at the Biltmore Estate to propose since he had never been there before. He had tickets to the house tour and dinner reservations, but he needed some input on the timing and logistics. We chatted and I came up with a plan for where and when the proposal would take place, with a couple backup scenarios for poor weather or changes in the timeline.
I have photographed and helped plan out many surprise proposals over the years at Biltmore. It is one of my favorite things to do! It is so exciting, and a once in a lifetime special moment. It is SO thoughtful to hire a professional photographer to capture the moment. it is next level to have photos to go along with the story you will be telling for the rest of your lives. If you plan to have children one day, it’s so sweet to be able to relive the moment with your kids one day through the photos.
I have photographed many surprise proposals at the Biltmore Estate over the years, and I think it SO much fun helping plan the perfect moment for couples who are visiting Biltmore for a romantic getaway. It is truly a magical place to propose with it’s architecture, beautiful gardens and extraordinary spaces that are so romantic. It changes each season with different flowers blooming, and wonderful holiday decorations that make a fantastic backdrop for your marriage proposal.
On the day of the proposal, Greg texted me to let me know they would soon be arriving to the spot. I was in position very early to make sure I could handle the timeline moving up if necessary, since you never know exactly how things will go the day of a surprise proposal. The waiting and anticipation is part of the fun for me! Greg chose the lagoon, which is a beautiful lake on the back side of the Biltmore Estate property. It is especially gorgeous in the fall when the leaves are changing, and they frame the Biltmore Estate in the background. It is a less busy spot than the classic spots out in front of the house, where tourists gather. The lagoon doesn’t guarantee you total privacy, but there are typically not crowds there, just a few folks here and there. There are trails that go around the lake with a small gravel parking lot, and it’s a bit off the main road, so unless you know about it, it’s not a likely stop for tourists.
I already knew what the couple looked like since I always ask for a photo prior to the proposal day, to make sure I can identify them without saying anything. I pretended to be a tourist or nature photographer taking photos of the lake and the fall foliage close to the proposal spot. Greg and Bee arrived and casually walked past me as I pretended to be super interested in photographing a bird in a tree, but I kept my eyes on them as they approached the “spot.”
Greg planned in advance to set up his cell phone on the ground to take a selfie, and that would be my clue that he was about to propose. When I saw that happen, I immediately turned my camera to the couple, and Bee was engrossed in the moment and paid me no attention. I had my telephoto lens on to make sure I could capture the action from a nice distance so I would not be intrusive or draw any attention to myself. I was able to capture everything without her even noticing until the very end, and this is always how it goes! I don’t think I have ever been noticed until I was pointed out at a proposal. It was a fun moment when Greg pointed me out to Bee. The look of surprise and excitement to have the moment professionally captured was awesome.
I gave them a few minutes to celebrate together and then I guided them around to the best spots on the Biltmore property for some engagement style photos. It was a great day, and I was so happy to document Greg’s surprise proposal to Bee! Scout ahead (or let me help):
I can guide you to the best spots based on time of year, lighting, and privacy.
Think about timing:
Early morning offers quiet peace and nice light. Sunset is golden and warm, and great if you want to celebrate with dinner afterwards. Weekdays are always less crowded.
Don’t overthink the setup:
You don’t need a huge production—just a plan, a meaningful spot, and a ring. If you DO want something a little extra, we can help with that. specializes in crafting elevated and stress-free experiences for our couples to help them have a sublime and special time. We can bring a charcuterie picnic complete with bubbly, flowers, and yummy dessert (think chocolate covered strawberries or assortment of local, award-winning chocolate truffles from The Chocolate Fetish) that we can set out for you to enjoy at the conclusion of your photo session.
Make sure your partner is dressed for the occasion:
You can give some hints that it would be a good idea to dress up for a fancy brunch or dinner, and propose before dinner on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate. If your partner is into getting their hair or nails done, ask one of their friends or family members to invite them to a day at the salon just before your trip to Biltmore.
Plan a romantic evening:
Have a nice hotel room booked to surprise your partner with for the evening after your proposal. There are several great places to say on the Biltmore grounds, and some other fantastic hotels and AirBnbs around the Asheville area. I am happy to recommend some places if you need some ideas.
How can we help? Shoot us a message on our contact page, and we can go from there.
